Cascina Sòt

Posted on: December 5th, 2016 by Mario Ferrero

Sordo Giovanni

Posted on: July 15th, 2016 by Mario Ferrero

The Azienda Agricola Sordo Giovanni is to be found in the heart of the well-known Barolo region, in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto – just few kilometers away from Alba, in the province of Cuneo. Giorgio the third generation of a family who has been tending and producing wines for more than a century.

53 hectares, spreaded out in the municipalities of Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour and Vezza d’Alba. Sordo is the only existing winery which can boast 8 different kinds of Barolo – the crus – whose vineyards are located in the areas of 5 different municipalities in the Barolo wine district.

A huge cellar – 111 big barrels from 50 to 120 hl – to ensure a perfect maturation and aging of the wine. Big barrels, made with Slavonian oak, are the secret of this centenary winery: this wood – thanks to its gentle feature – is not invasive with the wine which keeps its authentic taste so that what you will find in your glass is the real taste of our terroir. This is what tradition means – to carry on an habit that our ancestors tought us – just like the Sordo family has been doing for more than a 100 years.

Since 2014 Sordo built a new cellar with a amazing tasting room, a showroom – where you can discover and buy all the amazing wines with all the ranges of Barolo until 1990.

A guide will take you into the Sordo world showing you all the processes of the production walking through the big Slavonian oak barrels, running down at 12 meters underground to, following the tunnel where big bottle formats are aging, all the way down to the tasting room – where a breathtaking view on the Langhe is waiting for you.

Gemma

Posted on: December 21st, 2015 by Mario Ferrero

Gemma came into being in 1978, when Silvano Piacentini decided to found a new wine producing enterprise in the commune of Serralunga d’Alba, located inside an old winery which had formerly belonged to the Marchesi Falletti’s Opera Pia Barolo (the premises have now been completely renovated, with state-of-theart vinification equipment and new barrels). The Gemma company actually owns around 25 hectares of vineyards – divided up between the communes of Serralunga and Monforte d’Alba, of which 65% consist of plantings of Nebbiolo for Barolo. In 1990, Giorgio Barbero joined the company. He works with the Faculty of Agriculture at Turin University, and it is he who is responsible for supervising and developing all of Cantine Gemma’s viticultural and winemaking operations.

Diego Morra

Posted on: April 29th, 2015 by Mario Ferrero

Our story began in the mid 1900s with our first piece of land. Today, at the center of our daily tasks, is a property that consists of 30 hectares of vines distributed among the towns of Verduno, La Morra, Roddi, and of 20 hectares of hazelnuts. Domenico, Antonio and  Diego: 3 generations, 3 different eras. Projected towards the future, but always with an eye on the past.

Our story is continually growing, according to the rhythms of the earth and of the passing generations.  Our work is one of continuous research and a renewal of the balance between man and nature.  It is one in which renewability plays a key role:  because our children, grandchildren and everyone that comes after us should continue to be able to enjoy our territory and its riches.

For Diego Morra, passion for the earth and for winemaking aren’t enough.  To these values, the winery has added courage, the ability to make the correct selection and a continuous search for improvement.

The courage to remain hard-to-please and to continue to move forward towards new goals, choosing the plots that, for tradition and vocation, are best suited to express the different characteristics of the wines we cultivate.  We pay close attention to expand our property only in the most prestigious zones.

We research and value the typicality of our hillsides, respecting the territory and its peculiarities with a daily commitment seen in our simple actions and continuous innovations. Every wine expresses the singular vineyard it comes from, the grape it gets its origins from and our ideas.

Sara Vezza winery has a long history, sweet as the hills on which it was born. A story that begins in the early twentieth century, when Sara’s grandfather, Ernesto, began to cultivate his vineyard.

In 1977 Josetta Saffirio, who has a degree in agriculture, decides to take care of the vineyards of the father. Flanked by her husband Roberto, winemaker, she began to cultivate the vineyards planted by her grandparents after the Second World War. After a few years, Josetta and Roberto fail to produce their first Nebbiolo. In 1985 was presented the first Barolo of the winery, as a result of a passion and a commitment never failed.

After a hiatus in the 90s, Sara Vezza, daughter of Robert and Josetta, decided to devote herself to the family vineyards. In 1999 the Barolo of Josetta Saffirio returned to the market: a wine that tradition has made unmistakable.
